Sleep Conference – For Staff and Parents

11th January 2021Mrs C Titherington
As we know sleep is a crucial part of a child’s learning journey and that the current pandemic may have impacted on ‘good sleep’ VSK have joined up with the Kent Education Psychology Service to deliver a sleep conference over 3 sessions. The full details of the course are below and we look forward to welcoming a range of professionals to this event.

Child and adolescent sleep workshop: the psychology of sleep and how it impacts child development and functioning

Educational psychologist, Dr Sylvie Furlong is running online sleep training across two days, with both sessions running for 1.5 hours. The sessions will cover the psychology of child and adolescent sleep, the ways sleep can be impacted and improved, sleep strategies and approaches, and the impact of trauma on sleep.

A third session will be available for school staff, introducing and exploring how schools can implement their own initiative in supporting pupils’ sleep. Sylvie conducted her doctoral research on child sleep, exploring how sleep difficulties impact children, families and schools. Her research identified extensive gaps in the knowledge of these groups, and a request for training on sleep. Sylvie has run sleep workshops for parents and whole school initiatives in supporting child sleep and raising awareness and knowledge about the importance of sleep.

The extensive research on insufficient sleep has highlighted the detrimental impact it can have on many factors including: cognitive development, academic performance, memory, emotional difficulties, mental health and wellbeing, and behaviour. However, it is an area that has been found to generate questions and confusion, with many professionals who work with children missing out on this important information.

This training is open and accessible to those wanting to increase their knowledge of child and adolescent sleep which may include social workers, school staff, parents and foster carers.

These sessions will be run virtually on Tuesday 26th January at 9:30am and 2nd February, and will both last for 1.5 hours. An additional session for school staff will run on Tuesday 9th March at 9:30am to discuss ideas and ways that this information can be utilised in school.
